USAT Liberty Wreck

The Liberty was torpedoed in 1942 and beached at Tulamben. The 1963 eruption of Mount Agung pushed the hull off the sand and into the sea, where it now lies parallel to shore in 5 to 30 metres — close enough that the whole dive starts and ends on foot.

Because it is a shore dive in sheltered water with almost no current, it is one of the few genuinely famous wrecks a newly certified diver can reasonably do.

• Great barracuda
• Garden eels on the sand
• Pygmy seahorse on the gorgonians
• Nudibranchs

잘 잠수하려면

• Enter and exit on a rising swell rather than fighting one. The beach is loose cobble and the walk in with a tank is the hardest part of the day.
• Dawn is the dive worth setting an alarm for: a school of bumphead parrotfish moves over the wreck early and disperses once the site fills.
• The wreck is broken and swim-throughs are tempting. Penetration is an overhead environment and wants the training that goes with it, however open the structure looks.
