Karimunjawa is Central Java's best-kept secret — a marine national park of 27 islands offering pristine beaches, turquoise lagoons, and spectacular snorkeling without the crowds of Bali or Gili Islands. Often called "Java's Maldives," it combines postcard-perfect tropical scenery with authentic Indonesian culture and affordable prices.
What to Do
- Island Hopping Tours — Visit Menjangan Besar (excellent snorkeling), Cemara Kecil (stunning white sand bar), Pulau Tengah (mangrove forest), and more. Full-day tours typically visit 4-5 islands.
- Shark and Stingray Pool — Swim with harmless blacktip reef sharks and stingrays in a natural enclosure at Menjangan Besar. Absolutely safe and a unique experience.
- Bukit Love (Love Hill) — Hike to this viewpoint for panoramic sunset views over the archipelago. The trail is steep but the vista is worth it.
- Diving and Snorkeling — The reefs around Karimunjawa are in excellent condition with healthy hard corals, abundant fish life, and good visibility (15-25m). Dive sites include shipwrecks and walls.
- Night Market — Every evening at the alun-alun (town square), local vendors grill fresh seafood. Try grilled squid, fish, and prawns for incredibly cheap prices.
Getting There
From Jepara (Central Java): Public KMC ferry "Siginjai" departs 2-3 times weekly (5-6 hours, very slow). Express Bahari speedboat runs daily (2 hours, more comfortable). Flights operate from Semarang to Dewadaru Airport (Kemujan Island) via Sky Aviation, but schedules are irregular.
Best Time to Visit
Dry season (April to October) offers best weather. July-August and holidays get busy with domestic tourists — book accommodation ahead. Shoulder season (April-June, September-October) offers perfect balance of good weather and fewer crowds.
