Wire, Speed, and the First Run

Wahoo are the reason wire leader exists. Their teeth shear through 100lb fluorocarbon like it isn't there — rig 30–40cm of single-strand #7–#9 wire ahead of the lure or you will donate tackle all day. They are also the fastest fish you'll troll for in these waters: captains here pull lures at 10–16 knots, roughly double normal trolling speed, because a wahoo will run down anything it can see. When one hits, the first run is instant and violent — 100–200 metres against a tight drag before you've touched the rod. Let it run; the fight after that first burst is surprisingly short.

Wahoo or Spanish Mackerel?

Anglers confuse the two constantly — both are long, silver, toothy speedsters caught the same way. The tells: a wahoo wears vertical tiger stripes that flare electric blue when it's lit up, its dorsal fin is long and low, and it runs far bigger — Lombok Strait fish commonly hit 15–25kg where Spanish mackerel average 5–10kg. If it screamed off 150 metres at full speed before slowing, it was a wahoo.
