Leaving the Bukit early

The roads down off the cliffs are quiet before dawn and slow once the surf traffic starts, so an early pickup buys real time here rather than just anxiety. For a morning departure from Nusa Dua, expect to leave around 06:00 — and treat a booked car as part of the boat ticket, because a ride-hail that never arrives on the Bukit is the classic way to miss a single-sailing departure.

Clifftop villas and bags

Pecatu and Bingin villas commonly sit down steps or a track a car cannot reach, and some of the famous beach stays are a genuine climb. Say which property when you book so the meeting point is agreed in advance rather than discovered at six in the morning with suitcases.

Boards and dive gear

Most people leaving Uluwatu for the Gilis are carrying boards or dive kit. Both travel, both are counted, and a board can attract a small fee at the counter. Book the car a class up if you have more than a couple of large items — the boot fills long before the seats do.

Sanur as the fallback

Nusa Dua runs one boat a day to Gili Trawangan. If it is full, held by weather, or simply leaves too early for you, Sanur has several sailings and is around an hour and a quarter from the cliffs. It is the longer drive and the safer plan when your date cannot move.

More departures, lower fares, and about forty minutes more driving each way. The right call whenever the single Nusa Dua sailing does not fit.

Fly to Lombok

The airport is close to the Bukit, so this is more practical from Uluwatu than from most of Bali: a short flight, a road transfer to Bangsal and a local boat to the island. Most expensive, least time at sea.
