The last boat back matters more here

Penida is a day trip for most people, and the return crossings stop in the late afternoon. If you are staying, this is irrelevant; if you are not, build the day around the last departure rather than the last viewpoint.

Do not plan to hire a scooter on arrival

The roads to the famous viewpoints are steep, narrow and often broken, and the island has a poor record for scooter injuries among visitors riding them for the first time. A car and driver for the day is the normal choice and costs less than most people expect.

Crossings and the weather

The Badung Strait is genuinely choppy in the middle of the day and through the windy months. Morning crossings are calmer as a rule, and operators do cancel when it is bad — which is the one time a bundled booking earns its keep, because the car is re-timed with the boat.

Both run to Penida and both are further from the airport. They exist mostly for people already in east Bali, and the crossings are less frequent.

As a day trip from Sanur

If you are staying in south Bali anyway, a return crossing with a car and driver waiting on the island is a long but workable day — roughly 07:00 to 17:00. It is the same legs in the same order, just compressed.
