Getting there

  • Boats to Sampalan come from Kusamba on Bali: The Angkal, whose Nusa Penida office is in the port building, and Gangga Express both sail here, and the crossing takes about 30 minutes. Most boats from Sanur land at Banjar Nyuh instead.

Getting around

  • Drivers and scooter rentals are on offer at the harbour and in Sampalan, which also has ATMs. Still bring enough cash: many warungs and scooter rentals do not take cards.

Facilities

  • Sampalan is a government port with a terminal building and waiting area, opened in November 2022. In July 2024 the port head said its turning basin is too narrow for large fast boats, so only smaller boats use it.

Good to know

  • High seas close crossings at times: in August 2026 waves of about 2.5 m shut the Kusamba crossing for part of a morning.

  • At The Angkal’s terminal a jetty leads straight to the boat, so you board dry.

Getting there

  • Kusamba has three separate fast-boat terminals: Tribuana, Banjar Bias and The Angkal’s own terminal in Kampung Kusamba. Gangga Express leaves from Tribuana and The Angkal from its own terminal; both sail to Sampalan on Nusa Penida in about 30 minutes. Check which terminal your ticket names.
  • Kusamba is on Bali’s east coast near Padang Bai, a handy alternative to Sanur if you are staying in east Bali.

Facilities

  • The Angkal’s terminal has a waiting room right on the beach. After high waves flooded it in August 2026, the ticket counter moved to the west side of the site.
