Fast Boat Padang Bai to Gili Islands

The Padang Bai to Gili Islands maritime corridor is the most direct and heavily trafficked fast boat route connecting Bali to the Gili archipelago: Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno. Because Padang Bai is located on Bali's eastern coast, it offers the shortest physical sea crossing over the Lombok Strait compared with southern ports like Sanur or Serangan.

For travelers staying in East Bali, Candidasa, Amed, Sidemen, or Ubud, Padang Bai is usually the most practical departure point for reaching the Gili Islands. The route is especially useful when the priority is minimizing time at sea and reaching the islands in the morning.

Most large fast boat operators run a circuit rather than direct single-island point-to-point trips. The standard drop-off sequence is usually Gili Trawangan first, then Gili Air, with Gili Meno handled by direct stop, offshore transfer, or local transfer depending on the operator and sea conditions.

Gili Trawangan is usually the first stop from Padang Bai, with transit time around 1.5 hours. Gili Air is usually the second stop, with total travel time around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. These timings can change with vessel type, loading time, currents, and Lombok Strait conditions.

Gili Meno requires extra planning. Many high-capacity fast boats, including some large ferry-style vessels, may not dock directly at Gili Meno because of shallow reef conditions. Passengers may need to transfer from Gili Trawangan by public hopper boat, or the fast boat may anchor offshore and move passengers by smaller transfer boat.

Padang Bai Harbor is a busy public port serving fast ferries, local ferries, and cargo traffic. Arrive at least 60 minutes before departure, keep small cash ready for the local harbor fee, and expect limited shade around the boarding area. Keep fragile electronics, passports, sunscreen, and seasickness medication in your carry-on while larger luggage is loaded by port staff.

Ticket prices for Padang Bai to the Gili Islands usually range from IDR 325,000 to IDR 550,000 per person, depending on the operator, vessel class, final island, and seasonal demand. Morning departure slots are the strongest option and can sell out quickly during July-August and December-January.

Afternoon options are more limited because sea conditions can become rougher later in the day. During monsoon transitions from November to March and high-wind periods around July-August, seasickness is more common on the Lombok Strait, so choosing a larger vessel and preparing medication before departure is practical.
